Origin and History of Rice

Rice, one of the oldest and most widely consumed crops in the world, originated in Asia, particularly in the delta region of the Yangtze and Ganges rivers, where it began to be cultivated around 10,000 years ago. The spread of rice was driven by trade and the expansion of civilizations, making it a staple food in many cultures, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

In Brazil, rice was introduced by Portuguese colonizers in the 16th century. Initially grown in small areas for local consumption, rice adapted well to the climate and soil conditions of different regions of the country, becoming one of the foods most consumed by Brazilians, usually paired with beans.

Expansion of Rice Farming in Brazil

Over the centuries, rice grew from a subsistence crop into one of Brazil’s main agricultural activities. The country has a vast diversity of ecosystems that allow rice to be produced under different systems, such as upland rice (grown without irrigation) and irrigated rice (produced in flooded fields).

The states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Tocantins, Mato Grosso and Maranhão are the largest rice producers in Brazil, with irrigated rice grown in the South accounting for most of the national production.
